What can I make with Recycled Soda Cans?
There are endless possibilities on things you can make with aluminum soda cans. I've made lots of accessories including magnets, brooches, Christmas ornaments, bookmarks, earrings, necklaces, rings, and hair clips. I've also done larger scale things including a two by four foot wall hanging that involved over one thousand tiny little silver soda can squares. Larger projects definitely take tons and tons more time, but the results are pretty amazing. You will get so many compliments when you can create something that most people see as trash into something they'd be willing to display in their own living room.
What kind of Safety Precautions should I take?
When working with any type of metal, including soda cans, you should always wear protective gloves. Sometimes gloves seem to get in the way while you are working, which can definitely get a little aggravating, but it's always better to be safe then sorry. I would also advise you to keep this type of project away from any age child.
Where can I get soda cans if I don't drink them myself?
I personally only take cans from people I know, and I will only take them if they've already been rinsed out. If they aren't rinsed out somewhat soon after they are used, you will go to cut them open and find mold. They still clean up fine, but it's more work and just not worth it, in my opinion. I would have rather just sent them to the recycling center by then. If you don't know a whole lot of people who buy soda cans, you could always post on craigslist or any social website asking for rinsed out soda cans for an art project you are doing. Some people might supply them to you for free, but if you have trouble, offer a few cents a can.
